My contest idea, or just an idea in general is : I would love to see a LIST of JOE;S (yours) favorites. Your top 3 artists, you worked with, your top writers you worked with, Your best experiences at Marvel or elsewhere, your favorite places to eat in San Diego, your top 3 life lessons etc. I love lists and yours would be totally cool. I WOULD really like to see the opposite list, Your 3 LEAST favorite artists to work with Your LEAST favorite writers, but I don't think you would put that list out.. or would you? -Serge-

I'll except that because at least there are some memories at Shea when the Mets didn't suck. And no, I'm not bitter...

Calgary is on my bucket list of shows and cities that I'd love to visit. I hear it's beautiful, even if it is in Canada ;^)

Contest idea: Every person from every state who enters has to write a short 3-5 sentence origin story for if Steve Rogers had become Captain America in their hometown/home state. For instance: I'm from Boston, so if Steve Rogers were from here, I'd wager he would have grown up in South Boston, be a bit of a scrappy truant, joined the MA ROTC, and spent time fighting local unsavory Winter Hill mob figures. For people outside the US, how would Steve Rogers' story be different for your country? etc etc.

Contest idea. My name on one side of a coin, everyone else's name on the other side of the coin. Hey, need to be fair 😊. Thank you for your time

That's a great id---

Hey, wait a minute!

Hey Joe, here is my contest idea! People share a photo (worst/funny) with a comic creator. I’m sure everyone has a photo they are like “what was I doing” haha. I have a great one with Kevin Smith!

Not bad, Dallas, though we all know that the worst creator photos are with Dan Panosian. He loves to hog the camera.

Oh man, can’t believe I forgot the Dan caveat!! Haha. Luckily I have not had a chance to experience that yet. I have also not had an opportunity with you, so you should come up to the Calgary Fan Expo next April!!

PS I’ll come up with a better Dan proof contest idea!

More on the way, just for you Claudio.

I totally get why creators are doing it, but I miss the free signatures days. At various Fan Expo Canadas, I got Tim Sale, Steve McNiven, and Bendis signatures and the two or three minute conversations I had while they were signing are what I really cherish.

I hear you. Though times have changed, I think creators are always up for chatting. I know I am.

Thanks for the suggestion, Joe.

Joe, I'm a superfan of Bendis. And of you Joe. So I REALLY want to win that Captain America art of yours!!! Because if I win, I'm going in to the live Jonxworld class where Bendis lectures on Zoom, and I'm going to show off the art on camera when I get to speak. Just to see Brian seethe with jealousy and rage!!! That another substacker crashed his substack in some way. 😉😂💖 I met Brian recently when he reviewed my 1st comic script. It was a great help! 💪

David, are you saying that you want to use my art in order to gloat and rub it in Brian's face?

I LIKE it!

But you'll still have to win it fair and square.

😂👍 Will do!

Thank you Joe,

When I see the notification that you published a newsletter, I get the same sensation as when I was a kid going to the comic store to pick up a new issue of either Spider-Man or X-Men.

I got two questions. Number one is, and you're probably tired getting asked this, but can you do a behind-the-scenes retrospective on One More Day ( and/or events leading up to it)? I mean this in the most fun way possible, I would love to read about it, with all the juicy details and ideas that were kicked around. I'm a sucker for stuff like this. It's probably equivalent to watching the dvd extras for movies.

Numer two would be, as a graphic designer, who works in the movie poster industry, I started working on my drawings as well to incorporate it more into my work, your art, David Finch's and Bagley's is among my main inspirations, what would you say or rather recommend to study? I notice that noir / chiaroscuro and Alphonse Mucha is a great inspiration for you.

Gyorgy, perhaps someday I'll dig into One More Day, but it would probably be a multi part newsletter. Also, to be honest, I spoke so much about it back in the day that I don't know if there's much more I can add.

Mucha is perhaps my all time favorite commercial artist along with Rockwell, McCay, Parish and many more. I went to art school as an Illustration major, so my roots are grounded in the past of that field.

Thank you!

Yes Mucha is among my favorites as well, have even an artbook from him that I use to draw from as warmup. Norman Rockwell's art is gorgeous and now I checked out the other two and have to say Parrish's paintings are breathtaking.

Do you plan on doing informative drawing videos sometime on rendering, shading and so on?

Contest idea: share your favourite comic panel(s) that include blank text bubbles, and have us fill in the story to go along with the scene(s) on the page.

Am looking forward to FanExpo, and the opportunity to visit your booth! Thanks for the fun. 🙂

Hate to sound like an old guy, but Daredevil's best redesign ever was Wally Wood's all-red costume after Bill Everett's original yellow-and-red. Still, you did say "perhaps."

Glen, I see your point and agree, but the majority of the change was removing the yellow, getting rid of the wrestler singlet look, and adding and extra D to the chest icon. Also the original was only around for six issues, kind of like the Hulk's original gray skin. While it was the first, I wouldn't consider it THE definitive costume.

What Marco did was come up with a wonderful new silhouette that feels in character, yet different enough to register as a fresh overhaul of a classic look. Not an easy thing to accomplish.

That's exactly what I was going to say. If DD had remained an eyesore, it's hard to imagine the character having any more solo success than Hank Pym.

As a side note I hate seeing people get stuff signed to resell it. I have all the original art and signed comics I’ve ever gotten. When they get sold down the line that’ll be on my kids cause I’m no longer around 🤣. You’re one of the few on my list I’ve never managed to get. One day though 😀

My contest idea, since Joe’s been showing us his perspective of the good ole days as a creator we should share some of ours as fans. We can call it “Back in my day....” and then tell a story of what we enjoyed going to comic stores, conventions, and other comic-related events. I’ll start mine, Back I’m my day I used to sell 5 boxes of pop tarts a day to come up with the money to buy my weekly pull list at the local comic store. I’d take these books to cons and get them signed for free at NYCC and artist would always tell me stories of how they came up with the cover or how I could be expecting something awesome next month based on the upcoming plot. I still distinctly remember Jim Cheung so excited for the upcoming issues of Secret Warriors, which was an awesome throwback Howling Commandos\ Captain America story.

I love this story, CQ, and if it was an actual contest you would have won ;^)

BTW, I love Pop Tarts, though they've been skimming on the filling for years now.

Thanks for the reply Joe, some of my favorite conversations at cons was just nerding out with my favorite artists and writers. Another contest idea just came up, “Guess Joe Q’s favorite Pop Tart flavor?” My money is on cinnamon.

Expand full comment

It would count me out of the contest cause I can’t draw but how about a contest where everyone that wants designs a cover for say a new Ash book or something and you critique the art and give feedback as a lesson for everyone, to make it easier for you, say you pick the 10 most interesting, best worst whatever speaks to you.

You could alternatively have everyone draw the same page of a script for the same exercise. As someone that can’t draw stick figure we’ll your insights would be super instructive as to why some pages “work” and others don’t.
